Helen’s Closet March Dress Hack

Helen’s Closet March Dress Hack

Sometimes you just need something quick and fun to wear! The March apron dress hack by Helen’s Closet has been on my to do list ever since I saw it back in March. It was similar to apron dresses I’d seen in the past, but without the “Little House on the Prairie” tradwife vibes.  I knew it would be perfect for my handwoven kaleidoscope cotton from Blackbird Fabrics (and I was right)!

Normally, I spend some time gushing about how great my fabric is, but I thought that would be a bit unfair considering this fabric is sold out.  Fingers crossed it comes back in stock because it’s wonderfully lightweight and vibrant fabric.  While I made this dress in autumn, this fabric practically screams summertime.  The 100% cotton fabric is naturally breathable and since it was handwoven, no piece of fabric is exactly the same.  I absolutely love it and used as much yardage as I possibly could.

This will be a fairly short blog because all I did was follow the instructions on Helen’s Closet’s blog. My measurements differ a bit though, so I lengthened my sleeves and bodice by 2 inches, my skirt by 10 inches and made 4 50-inch-long waist ties. Other than that, I followed the blog to the T and completed my dress in a day.

All I have to say about this dress is MAKE IT!  The original March dress is a favorite of mine and this hack makes it even better.  I honestly wish I hadn’t waited so long to make it.  It’s comfy, flattering, stylish and fun!  You can even add pockets, but I ran out of fabric, so no pockets for me.  If you’re worried about coverage, feel free to wear something underneath the dress.  I wore a long tank top and other than a few rogue gusts of wind while I was outside walking, I never felt like I was at risk of exposing the goods.  But don’t take my word for it.  Make it yourself!
