Have you heard the latest news from Minerva? In addition to offering a staggering number of high-quality brands and exclusively-designed fabrics, Minerva has partnered with some of your favorite creatives to make one of a kind fabrics! Their debut collection is a partnership with Tammy Handmade and features three different fabric lines with 10 different, colorful prints. I was lucky enough to be gifted this Charmeuse Silky Satin in the romantic Hopeful Hearts print. The fabric is so silky and light, that I knew I wanted to turn this fabric into a fun, layering piece. Hacking the Saltwater Slip dress by Friday Pattern Company, this dress is exactly what I was hoping for – a fun dress that works well as a slinky, standalone alone and as a layer that adds a needed burst of color!
I love finding new ways to use patterns I already own. Years ago, I was a pattern tester for the Saltwater Slip dress for Friday Pattern Company. While the pattern is adorable, I rarely wear straight column silhouettes, so I wasn’t sure how much use I’d get out of the pattern. Thankfully, Chelsea (owner of FPC) released an awesomely thorough video showing how she hacked her Saltwater to have a drop waist and a gathered skirt. I saw it and immediately knew that I need to make it. The full video can be found on the Friday Pattern Company YouTube channel, so I highly suggest checking it out. I basically followed Chelsea’s instructions, added a matching fabric belt, and voila – a Saltwater Slip dress that I will actually use.
The star of the show, however, has got to be the beautiful satin designed by Tammy Handmade. When it comes to prints, I prefer large scale designs, and the Hopeful Hearts design is exactly what I look for. This slightly sheer, lightweight fabric is the perfect fabric for flowy dresses, skirts, blouses and even dressing gowns. This fabric laundered well and didn’t lose any vibrancy, but be sure to finish your seams. Satin can easily unravel if not treated delicately and this fabric is so exception.
As I mentioned before, there are several different options if silky satin isn’t for you. The other fabric options are EcoVero Viscose Challis and Crisp Organic Cotton Poplin. With all these options, I’m sure you can find the perfect fabric for any upcoming project. I know that I can’t wait to check out the other stunning fabrics in Tammy’s collection!
